A Message from the Principal
Dear parents and friends,
Wow – what a busy and rewarding term it has been! As we reach the halfway point of the year, it’s a great time to reflect on the many wonderful experiences and achievements from Term 2.
Some of our highlights have included a vibrant and successful Athletics Carnival, early years visits to the Pioneers’ Home, our Year 6 students experiencing the excitement of camp in Brisbane, and the acknowledgement of First Responders Day. We also celebrated important faith milestones, with students receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Of course, we can’t forget the community spirit on display during the ASHOF Campdraft and the Motorbike Raffle – two fantastic events that showcased the strength of our school community.
Semester 1 Report Cards will be available to parents from 12:00pm this Friday via the Parent Orbit App. If you haven’t yet downloaded the app or are unsure how to access your child’s report, please contact the front office on 07 4994 8375 before Friday to ensure you’re ready.
A big congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 4 students, who have taken out the Accelerated Reader Champion title for Term 2! These outstanding readers maintained comprehension scores of over 80% – an incredible achievement. They’ll enjoy a well-deserved ice cream party and movie/sport session this Thursday at 11:30am to celebrate their efforts.
Looking ahead to Term 3, Week 1 kicks off with Challenge Cup in Yeppoon for our Year 5 and 6 netball and rugby league students. They’ll team up with students from Barcaldine, Blackall and Springsure Catholic schools to form the Western Wave. Mr KD, Mrs Neuendorf, Miss Walker and I are looking forward to supporting our teams during what promises to be an exciting week of sport and teamwork.
Finally, good luck to Mr KD and the Longreach/Ilfracombe Tigers as they take on the Barcaldine Sandgoannas in this weekend’s Central West Rugby League Grand Final. We hope it’s a game played in great spirit – and of course, we’re cheering for the Tigers to come out victorious!
Wishing all our students, staff and families a safe, relaxing holiday. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a fun-filled and energised Term 3.
God bless
Mr Peter Thurecht

Want or Need
Never have we known so much about healthy eating and yet our society is plagued by the results of unhealthy eating: obesity, anorexia and excessive emphasis on body image. Just consider that last one. People will choose what they eat according to how it will affect their body image. In fact, what this means is someone will choose what they eat according to how someone else at a later time may judge the look of their body – even people the only ‘encounter’ through cyberspace. This is crazy, but it is also common.
We should eat according to what we need or what we want. If we truly listen to our bodies, and appropriately discipline them, we may come to that happy state where what we eat and what we need are the same. Recent studies have show that people who eat slowly and take time to enjoy what they eat are less likely to be obese. In other words, they focus on what they want and need and enjoy that. They are not mindlessly eating food they particularly don’t want or need. A good way to balance our eating habits is to ask “Do I really want or need this?” and if the answer is “Yes” to take the time to enjoy it.
Jesus used the experience of wanting or needing food as a sign of our relationship to him. Our hearts are made for the experience of God’s love, but we spend so much of our lives pursuing experiences and things that we neither want or need. Jesus speaks often of the hunger in our hearts and how he desires to fulfil that. The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus, given under the form of Bread and Wine, shows how far he will go to fulfil our needs and wants. But we are looking for that fulfilment in all the wrong places. To find our true heart, a good question to often ask ourselves is, do I really want this or do I really need this?
Loving Father, help me to truly seek the things that will fulfill my heart and my life and make me a more loving person. I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.

Welcome to Week 10 of Term 2 – the final week of the term!
Reflection on Term 2
Easter Season
Term 2 at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School began with the joyful celebration of the Easter Season, following the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. This sacred time in the Church calendar invited our school community to reflect on the hope, renewal, and promise of new life that the risen Christ brings. The weeks following Easter were filled with opportunities for prayer, reflection, and liturgical celebration, helping students and staff deepen their understanding of the Paschal Mystery and live out the message of Easter in their everyday actions—through compassion, kindness, and a renewed sense of faith.

The Passing of Pope Francis
Amid this season of joy, we also entered a time of mourning as our school joined the global Church in grieving the passing of Pope Francis. His life of humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and mercy inspired countless acts of faith and touched hearts around the world. At Our Lady’s, we honoured his legacy through prayer and reflection, remembering his powerful messages of love, inclusion, and care for the poor and the environment. His example reminded us of what it means to truly live as disciples of Christ.

ANZAC Day
Another significant moment in Term 2 was our commemoration of ANZAC Day, a deeply meaningful national event. We gathered as a school community to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. Through prayer, ceremony, and classroom learning, students reflected on the values of courage, service, and remembrance. The ANZAC spirit was explored not only as a part of our national identity, but also through our Catholic lens, considering themes of peace, justice, and compassion in relation to the sacrifices made by others.

Catholic Identity Gathering
Soon after ANZAC Day, I had the privilege of attending the Catholic Identity Gathering in Rockhampton in my role as APRE. Led by Brother Damien Price, the gathering offered a meaningful and deeply reflective experience that beautifully built upon our Term 2 journey. Br Damien’s emphasis on presence and authentic encounter reminded us that faith grows when we slow down, listen deeply, and truly connect with one another and with God. Inspired by his decades of service and his work with Edmund Rice Camps and Eddie’s Van, I look forward to bringing these insights back to Our Lady’s and nurturing more compassionate relationships in our school community.
Pope Leo XIV
Continuing this theme of reflection and connection, we witnessed a historic moment in the life of the Church with the inaugural general audience of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope. Addressing 40,000 people in St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV shared a powerful message of peace, compassion, and care for the most vulnerable—especially children, the elderly, and the sick. His call for humanitarian aid and an end to violence reflects the values we uphold at Our Lady’s. In his meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, he also addressed the influence of technology on young people, encouraging its use to promote empathy and human dignity. A light-hearted moment came when he was honoured by his hometown baseball team, the Chicago White Sox—a reminder of his humility and humanity. We continue to keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he leads the Church with wisdom and heart.

Mother’s Day
As the term continued, we joyfully celebrated Mother’s Day—an occasion deeply rooted in our Catholic tradition. It’s a time when we honour our mothers, grandmothers, and all those who nurture with love and grace, as well as Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our celebrations began with a warm and welcoming breakfast where families came together to share food, laughter, and appreciation. This was followed by a beautiful liturgy led by our Prep students, whose heartfelt prayers and songs reminded us of the many ways mothers reflect God’s unconditional love.

National Reconciliation Week
Later in the term, our school marked National Reconciliation Week—an important time to reflect on our shared history and the ongoing journey toward justice and unity. Grounded in our Catholic values of dignity, compassion, and truth, we explored the importance of truth-telling, listening, and walking in solidarity with our First Nations peoples. Through prayer, classroom activities, and whole-school reflection, students were encouraged to be peacemakers and bridge-builders—upholding the voices, cultures, and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with respect and compassion.

Pentecost and the Confirmation of Students
As Pentecost approached, our focus turned to this significant feast celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Pentecost marks the birth of the Church and reminds us of the courage and unity the Spirit brings. Through prayer, song, and learning, students reflected on the gifts of the Holy Spirit—wisdom, understanding, right judgement, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder—and how they can use these gifts to live out their faith within and beyond our school.
Our Parish community was especially blessed to celebrate Pentecost with a special Mass led by Bishop Michael McCarthy. This was a particularly joyful occasion, as Bishop Michael also conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on two of our students, Joshua and Grace. Surrounded by family, friends, and our parish, they received the gifts of the Holy Spirit and affirmed their commitment to living as disciples of Christ. It was a faith-filled celebration that highlighted the significance of Pentecost and the rich life of our school-parish partnership.

Looking Ahead to Term 3
It has certainly been a full and vibrant Term 2, filled with prayer, reflection, learning, and community. As we look ahead, Term 3 promises to be equally rich with opportunities and celebrations. Students and staff are already preparing for exciting events including the Challenge Cup in Yeppoon, Catholic Education Week—launched this year by the Diocese of Rockhampton—Book Week, Storyfest out West, and the Winton Poetry Competition. We will also gather to celebrate Holy Days of Obligation, including the Feast of the Assumption.
With so much to look forward to, we are excited to continue growing together in faith, learning, and community spirit.
God Bless,
Mr Sahlie Komndi-Diggins
Student Protection

Student Protection is taken very seriously within our school and Diocese. Each year all staff undertake mandatory student protection training at the beginning of the year. This year our School Student Protection Officers are Mr Peter Thurecht, Mr Sahlie Komndi-Diggins, Mrs Belinda Thurecht and Ms Sarah Wall. If you have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact one of our officers.
MPC Loop Carpark – A Few Reminders
As we near six months of using our MPC Loop Carpark, we’d like to thank families for their support and remind everyone of a few key expectations to ensure things continue running smoothly:
- If your child is not yet at the loop, please continue around and park in the squash court area instead of waiting in the pick-up bay.
- If your child is in the car, you are welcome to pull out—even if the car in front has not yet moved.
- For safety reasons, please stay inside your vehicle while in the pick-up zone.
- If there are free spaces at Gates 1, 2, or 3, please move forward rather than waiting at Gate 4.
We appreciate your help in keeping this area safe and efficient for all families.
